What is Threaded Discussion?

The Discussion Board in WebCT allows you to participate in vitual conversations. 'Threaded discussion refers to online discussion postings that are related to a specific topic. The instructor or students can post a message or respond to a message at any time and from any location. The initial message posted by the instructor or a student may be responded by other messages. A series of messages is called a 'thread'.

A thread of messages in WebCT is visible in the message topic window. The first number in Messages column tells you the number of messages in this thread. The second number in Messages tells you the number of unread messages in this thread. (New) identifies messages that you have not read. When you click
, you see a list of messages in the thread with subject, author, and date.

A message posted on the Discussion Board in WebCT can be viewed by all students in the class and the instructor. Therefore, the discussion board is used to share information with others. If you would like to write a private message to someone (your instructor or another student in the class), use WebCT mail instead.
