Erin R. Mason

Welcome

Science Man

Students at graduation

I am the Educational Technology Specialist at Middlesex Community College. Together with Yi Guan, Director of Distance Learning, I support faculty and staff with the implementation of technology. Instructional design, training, and web site maintenance are major functions of my job.

The purpose of this site is to promote the Distance Learning program at Middlesex Community College and to give you some information about my skills, abilities, and education.

Educational Beliefs

I believe that the purpose of technology is to enhance one's job. In terms of instructional design, I believe the focus of any course, online or on ground, is the content. Technology should be used in a way that promotes the successful delivery and understanding of the specific content area. Technology should enable you to perform essential job functions more efficiently. If technology is encumbering office productivity instead of enhancing it, the technology needs to be questioned.

I believe that the primary focus of technology is not to distance but to connect. E-mail, text messaging, social networking sites (Facebook, MySpace), blogs, online forums and discussion boards, and wikis are all popular because they enable people to connect to each other, to form cyber communities. Harnessing this power, particularly in classroom discussions, in a effective tool and one we, as educators, need to implement successfully.

Areas of Interest
  • Online communication: using discussion boards, wikis, blogs, and podcasting in the online classroom
  • The implementation of a successful ePortfolio program
  • The first year experience, and how it can be enhanced though the use of technologies
  • The use of assistive technologies in education
