Guidelines For Tutees

Welcome to the College Learning Center. The staff of the CLC at MxCC would like to share some guidelines that will make your experience with the tutoring process more valuable and pleasant. Relax and enjoy the experience. Tutoring is meant to be a constructive experience outside the classroom, which helps you succeed in a particular subject area. If you need help, usually a tutor can work on an individual basis or with students in small groups. As long as tutors are available and times coincide, we are usually very flexible in regards to meeting your needs. The CLC can be used for studying and study groups, so please feel free to come in at any time.

The following guidelines are for all students who use the Center and were developed in order for you to make the most of your time in the Center.

  • Sometimes your tutor will schedule tutoring with you. All arrangements for tutoring sessions are made at the mutual convenience of you and your tutor. It will be necessary for you and your tutor to exchange phone numbers. If this is not possible, please notify the Learning Center at
    (860) 343-5770.

  • If you can not keep your appointment, call your tutor or the Learning Center to cancel.
  • Tutoring is most effective when you are prepared by having done your reading, attempted to do your homework, and have prepared specific questions. Tutors have been instructed not to do your homework; please understand that tutoring is assistance, not a substitute for studying or attending class.
  • Remember that neither the student tutors nor the professional staff know or remember everything about everything. Sometimes they might need to go back over something to remember how a particular process works. Be patient.
  • Please make sure that you sign in and out in the log book located as you enter the CLC each time you use the Center even if you are only coming in to study. We generate a report at the end of the semester and this information becomes part of the data that is submitted in the report. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
  • If you are requesting tutoring, even if you are only asking a question in the Center, you will be asked to fill out a request for tutoring form. We need this information for our records and because we do a follow up on students at the end of the semester. This gives us information on providing services and is useful in writing reports and requesting funds.
  • Please come prepared, having looked over homework assignments. Bring questions to your sessions. Please do not come, expecting to do all your homework with your tutor or expecting your tutor to do your homework for you.
  • We have available math and study skills tapes that you may view in the Center. Ask your tutor for assistance in using them.
  • And REMEMBER, all tutoring is Free of Charge!
