Distance Learning Library Services

Information for Students

The Library Shell in Blackboard
Every MxCC student is enrolled in the Blackboard Vista course “MxCC – Library.” Here you will find information on accessing library resources from home, library services for distance learners, and online research tutorials.

Accessing Library Resources from Home
You can do your own research at home! We offer remote access to full-text electronic books and article databases through myCommNet. Refer to How to Access Library Resources from Home for instructions on locating these great resources.

Accessing Resources at the Library
We are home to many great books, DVDs, CDs, videos, reference materials, magazines, journals, microforms, and course reserves. As an online student, you have the same borrowing privileges as on-ground students. Although we cannot mail items to your house, if you give us a call (860.343.5830), we will hold them for pick-up for 48 hours.

Meriden students: You can request items to be sent to the Meriden campus from the Middletown campus. See Intercampus Loan to Meriden for more information.

We can also order items from other libraries for you, at no charge, through our InterLibrary Loan service. To search for items in our library and other libraries, check out our Find Books page.

Research Help
We offer online and in-person reference assistance. Go to our Help with your Research page for Subject Research Guides, Tip Sheets, Citation Style Guides, and more. You can also contact us via email and phone (860.343.5830).

Information for Faculty

The Library Shell
Every MxCC student and instructor is enrolled in the Blackboard Vista course “MxCC – Library.” Point students here for information on accessing library resources from home, library services for distance learners, and online research tutorials.

Accessing Library Resources from Off-Campus
To find eBooks and articles, students need to go to the “Library” tab in myCommNet. (Note: they cannot access library resources from home via the library website.) For more information, see How to Access Library Resources from Home.

Online Tutorials
To aid students with research, instructors may link to these tutorials from their course shell.

Instruction classes
Librarians are available to conduct instruction for on-ground and hybrid courses at the request of MxCC faculty. We can cover basic and subject-specific research methodology and access to resources. Call 860.343.5830 to discuss with a librarian, or submit a request online.

Live research help
We can provide live help to your class via Blackboard's Chat feature. Contact us to schedule a time!
